General Surgeons
A surgeon is a Doctor of Medicine(MD) who specializes in the treatment of surgical patients. General Surgery is a surgical specialty dedicated to the management of a broad range of diseases. A General Surgeon receives 9 years of medical training after completing undergraduate studies. He then must pass the two part comprehensive examination for certification by the American Board of Surgery. After completing at least two years of active general surgery practice, application can then be made to become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). The applicant must submit a list of operations performed as well as analysis of the outcome. The treatment modalities practiced by a General Surgeon vary somewhat depending on the needs of the patients in the community and the background and skills of the surgeon. Most General Surgeons perform Gastrointestinal operations, breast operations, anorectal operations, hernia repairs, laparoscopic and open operations for gallbladder, as well as other operations.
